Boise State football's hallmark is the blue turf of Lyle Smith Field at Albertsons Stadium. It was installed in 1986 under the leadership of athletic director Gene Bleymaier with the intention of setting BSU apart by having a football field that represented their school colors (in combination with the orange track that surrounded the field). “The Blue” was the first non-green playing surface in football history, and remained the only one in FBS for almost 20 years.
